Alton Water Standard distance triathlon that became a duathlon – Kerry

This event hasn’t had much luck with covid and now two years of blue green algae making it unsafe for the swim. Either way I was happy just to be racing and a duathlon was better than no race!

The first run leg was 3km out and back and I started off with a pretty good pace for me but found that there were a lot of people over taking me. I held my pace though and just tried not to think about being last!

I think my approach to the run paid off as I started picking people off one by one on the bike leg and knew my average was really good for me but I also felt strong so held it for the two laps. I remember Allie messaging me before the race saying just enjoy the first race back and treat it as a training race but I was buzzing when I got off the bike so decided to just go till I blow on the run.

Again, I started to pass people on the run keeping a decent average pace especially with the heat. I glanced at my watch just before the finish line to see I was less than 1 minute off my fastest standalone 10k time…..big smile for my finishing photo!!

I managed to get 3rd in my age category which I’m super happy about!
